How to Know You Need to Hire an Interior Designer

Being a scrappy and creative individual is an amazing trait that I admire so much. But what about if you’ve hit a wall in your redesign?

Interior designers make it their specialty to solve problems and provide solutions in situations where it feels like there are none. Some of the newer clients I’ve been working with recently are fiercely creative people that just needed that extra expertise from someone with experience.
So how do you know that it’s time to hire an interior designer? Here are some things that might tell you that you need an interior designer in your corner:

You have no idea where to start.

This is incredibly common and I don’t blame you! You have a lot of ideas, but organizing and prioritizing them feels like a bit of a struggle. If you’ve wondered for months and months about changing this or that in your home, hiring an interior designer could be a great way to give space to your thoughts and ideas. An interior designer should listen to the things you want to do, give suggestions on how to create an effective design, and then, once hired, they will put a plan into place on how to get it done. A lot of designers can be hired for full projects, or you can even hire them to help you with something small, like selecting paint colors or changing the layout of a room. If you are wondering where to start, it may be a good idea to get an interior designer involved in your project.

Your current space doesn’t feel functional, comfortable, or inviting.

If you’re constantly having to walk around the sofa to get to the dining table, or your spice rack in the kitchen is inconveniently placed above the refrigerator, you might want an interior designer to take a look at your layouts. Part of the interior designer’s job is to help you navigate the way the space actually feels and works day-to-day for you. It’s great if a room looks good, but being functional is incredibly important for us as humans to feel good in a space.

And beyond function, all humans deserve a level of comfort in their space. Part of function is determining what makes you feel at ease or most peaceful in your home. Sometimes the stress we feel day-to-day is linked to the organization and flow of our living space, and an interior designer can help you to refine it to perfection.

You’re interested in a mid-level renovation or more.

Perhaps you aren’t gutting your kitchen or bathroom, but you’re doing a lot more than buying furniture. For example, putting in a new countertop or choosing new cabinets or appliances. An interior designer has a wealth of resources to assist you with this and help you make the right choices.

Designers will help you to make sure you’re putting the right finishes in your home. For example, an unsealed Carrera marble countertop may look beautiful, but if you cook every night, you will likely stain and ruin it. An interior designer can help you find a marble-look quartz that will be far more suitable for your lifestyle.

You want an expert to back up your design decisions.

Each decision you make will ultimately eliminate thousands of other options, so it’s important to make sure you are as informed as possible. Designers can help you avoid selections that won’t serve you in the long run because they can see the bigger picture. They also know about specific products because it’s their job. They have either experienced or are familiar with the strengths and the shortcomings of the many options you will be choosing from.

You want to ensure you invest in the right areas.

Part of an interior designer’s job is to shop available options and provide solutions that make sense for the project. One way an interior designer does that is by evaluating job cost comparisons. If your major pain point in your home is that you don’t have a functional and comfortable spot to send emails or take professional video calls, for example, it makes sense to invest in creating an area in the home that can serve as a multipurpose office or desk space. Using that money wisely to serve a purpose and solve a handful of problems at once is what designers are trained to do.

Sure, the average person might be tempted to invest a ton of money into a hand-spun Turkish rug that they love, just because it is an expensive item. However, when an interior designer is on the project, they can help to guide you to get those things you want without sacrificing the budget in the process, or to suggest alternatives that will achieve the look. An interior designer will be able to make sure that you are putting your dollars to work effectively.
